Why we don’t ask you to sign up

Almost everything you do on this site is done without telling us who you are: finding a restaurant, reading a listing, looking at reviews, booking a table, cancelling it, requesting a table at a place that does not use Bitebooker, reporting that a listing is wrong or that the place has closed.

That is not generosity: it is that one more form is one fewer booking, and a report asked for behind a sign-up is a report that never arrives.

So how does it work

A booking lives at an address of its own, with a code in it, and that link reaches you by email: whoever has it can see the state and cancel. Nothing else is needed — which is also why that link is not passed around.

And since emails get lost, the browser remembers where you have been by itself: there is a «My bookings» page that reads that list from your device’s storage, not from an archive of ours. It holds the minimum needed to reopen a page — the place, the day, the time, the code — and it does not hold your name, phone, email, or how many of you were coming. You can empty it whenever you like, from the page itself: on a shared computer you probably should.

So what is the account for

Two things, and neither is compulsory.

1. Finding your bookings from another device. The browser list belongs to that browser: change phone and it is gone. Linked to an account you find them anywhere — and the linking is done one by one, by choice, never automatically: a device can belong to several people, and that browser’s memory holds the bookings of whoever used it, not of whoever just signed in. 2. Writing a review. Because a review here is tied to a meal that took place, and without an account there is no way to say whose meal it was.

Signing in uses Loonar ID: no new password to invent, and the password never passes through us.

What we do not do

There is no advertising, no profiling, and no banner to accept — because there is nothing to accept. Opening a page on this site tells nobody else that you opened it: no analytics service, no ad network, no map, no social button. It is something that can be checked, and we measured it: how we handle your data.
