The listings on this site come from public sources, and they age. A restaurant that closes does not tell any directory: the shutter is found by whoever goes there for dinner, which is why every listing carries a line asking whether it is all still true.
What you can report
Five things, picked with one tap:
- it has closed — out of business, or moved elsewhere;
- there is no restaurant at this address — a shop, a home, or nothing at all;
- it is the same place as another listing — it appears twice, perhaps spelled differently;
- some details are wrong — address, phone, hours, type of cuisine;
- something else.
The note is optional, and not out of laziness on our part: nobody should have to write an essay to tell us a place has closed. For the same reason there is no account to create — asking people to sign up in order to report an error means not receiving reports.
What happens next
Two outcomes, and the page tells you which one it was.
1. «The listing stays on the site for now.» Your report is recorded: if others confirm the same thing, the listing comes down. 2. «The listing has been taken down.» Others had already reported what you saw too, and with yours the place no longer appears in searches.
In the second case the listing goes on the spot — and if you try to reopen it you find a page that is no longer there. That is not a bug: it is the consequence of what you just pressed. It can linger in search results for a couple of minutes, which is how often those lists refresh.
Why we do not say how many it takes
Because publishing the count means publishing how far it is from the threshold — that is, explaining to anybody how many reports it takes to make a competitor’s restaurant disappear. We tell you what happens, not where we stand.
For the same reason a listing taken down is not gone for good: if it is a mistake, it goes back.
What we do not ask of you
We do not ask you to prove anything, we do not ask for an email address, and we do not thank you effusively. You did us a favour — you lost an evening in front of a closed shutter and stopped to say so — and the most useful thing we can do is tell you what happens now and let you go.
